Phenoloxidase and Melanization Innate Immune Activities in Green Darner Dragonfly Nymphs (<i>Anax junius</i>)

چکیده

Insects in the Order Odonata are highly subject to infection by gregarine parasites. However, despite important ecological roles that insects play every ecosystem which they exist, little research has been devoted description of insect immunity. rely heavily on rapid actions innate immune mechanisms prevent infection. We characterized melanization response hemolymph green darner dragonfly (Anax junius) nymphs. Incubation chymotrypsin-activated with L-DOPA resulted volume- and time-dependent production dopaquinone via phenoloxidase (PO) enzyme, biphasic accumulation product. The PO activity was temperature-dependent, a stepwise increase from 20℃ - 35℃ maximum measured at 40℃. formation product also inhibited concentration-dependent manner diethylcarbonate, specific inhibitor activity, indicated observed due presence enzyme. rate quantity melanin dependent exposure different titers bacteria. This is first characterization both dragonflies.

Simultaneous control of head and thoracic temperature by the green darner dragonfly Anax junius (Odonata: Aeshnidae)

Anax junius is a large dragonfly that regulates thoracic temperature (Tth) during flight. This species, like several other intermittently endothermic insects, achieves control of Tth at least in part by increasing circulation of hemolymph to the abdomen at high air temperature (Ta), thus facilitating heat loss from the thorax. In this paper, I demonstrate that heat transfer to the head is also ...

Dependence of flight behavior and heat production on air temperature in the green darner dragonfly Anax junius (Odonata: Aeshnidae)

The large, endothermic dragonfly Anax junius regulates the temperatures of its thorax (Tth) and head (Th) during flight. At high ambient temperature (Ta) it is able to dispose of excess heat from the thorax by increasing hemolymph circulation to the abdomen, but recent evidence suggests that heat loss to the abdomen is largely passive at Ta<30 &deg;C. Nevertheless, these insects continue to reg...

Trace element accumulation in lotic dragonfly nymphs: Genus matters

Constituents of coal combustion waste (CCW) expose aquatic organisms to complex mixtures of potentially toxic metals and metalloids. Multi-element trace element analyses were used to distinguish patterns of accumulation among 8 genera of dragonfly nymphs collected from two sites on a CCW contaminated coastal plain stream. Dragonfly nymphs are exceptional for comparing trace element accumulation...

Phenoloxidase Activity Acts as a Mosquito Innate Immune Response against Infection with Semliki Forest Virus

Several components of the mosquito immune system including the RNA interference (RNAi), JAK/STAT, Toll and IMD pathways have previously been implicated in controlling arbovirus infections. In contrast, the role of the phenoloxidase (PO) cascade in mosquito antiviral immunity is unknown. Here we show that conditioned medium from the Aedes albopictus-derived U4.4 cell line contains a functional P...

Some effects of experimental acidification on phenoloxidase, trypsin and lysozyme activities in freshwater crayfish (Pontastacus leptodactylus)

Levels of phenoloxidase (Po), trypsin and lysozyme activities were determined following 48 hours exposing freshwater crayfish (Pontastacus leptodactylus) weighing 59.8±3.4g to different low pH values of 6.5, 5.5, 4 and 2.5 at 20-23˚C. Significant decrease were found (p
